Abiu Tree– Pouteria Caimito This fruit belongs to Sapotaceae family.
Abiu – Delicious, wonderful, delightful and hard to find but here it is! 🙂
This tropical fruit tree bears bright yellow fruit (about the size of a small orange) with a sweet, caramel flavoured, creamy-white pulp.
Expect fruit in 2 years-3 years on trees ( growing in the ground) and trees grow 5-7 metres tall but can grow up to 15 metres (all depends on conditions) Abui grows well and flowers and fruits prolifically in tropical Queensland but cannot tolerate frost. Trees are normally self pollinating with help from your local bees, butterflies etc.
Abui also makes a gorgeous container plant grown on your veranda or in a sunny spot.
These are seedling plants from mature Abiui trees grown at Byfield Coastal Central Qld. Abiu originates from the Amazon basin in South America where it may have been cultivated for some thousands of years by the Indians of the region and is becoming popular worldwide in tropical areas in but not limited to Asia, USA, Hawaii and Australia
